    Working Hours

General: In Slovenia, the standard working week is 40 hours, typically spread over five days, with a 30-minute lunch break included. To qualify as a full-time employee, an individual must work at least 36 hours per week, except for those in particularly hazardous environments, who may work fewer than 36 hours.

Overtime: Any work beyond the standard 40-hour workweek is classified as overtime and is governed by the employment contract or collective agreement. There are limits on the amount of overtime allowed: a maximum of 8 hours per week, 20 hours per month, or 170 hours per year, with different rules potentially applying to minors, pregnant women, and individuals in hazardous work environments.

Overtime beyond the standard 40 hours per week is typically compensated at a rate specified in the employment contract or collective agreement, usually around 150% of the employee’s salary. Employers must provide written notice of any upcoming overtime.

    Leave

    Annual Leave (Vacation):

Employees in Slovenia are entitled to a minimum of four weeks (20 working days) of paid annual leave each calendar year, regardless of whether they are full-time or part-time. This entitlement is granted after six months of continuous employment and is prorated for those who have not yet reached six months.

Employers must ensure that employees take their annual leave by the end of the current calendar year. Employees must use at least two weeks of their annual leave by the end of the year, with the remaining leave to be used by June 30 of the following year, based on an agreement with the employer.

Additional annual leave is provided based on personal circumstances:

    • 3-5 years of service: 1 additional day
    • 6-10 years of service: 2 additional days
    • 11-15 years of service: 4 additional days
    • 16-20 years of service: 5 additional days
    • 21-25 years of service: 6 additional days
    • Workers with a child up to 15 years of age: 1 additional day per child
    • Workers under 18 years old: 7 additional days
    • Disabled workers with at least 60% physical disability and those caring for a child needing special care: additional leave as specified

In addition to annual leave, employers must pay a mandatory Holiday allowance by June 30 each year. For 2024, the tax-free allowance ranges from €1,253.90 to €2,317.82. Employers are required to pay at least the minimum monthly wage for the year, with proportional payments for employees hired mid-year.

    Sick Days

In Slovenia, employers are required to compensate employees for sick leave up to 30 days, with the compensation amount specified in the employment contract or collective agreement. For work-related illnesses or accidents, the employer must provide compensation at 100% of the employee’s regular salary. For regular sick leave, employees typically receive 80% of their salary.

Sick leave exceeding 30 days is covered by Social Security until the employee is fit to return to work or their employment is terminated.

Employees must provide a medical certificate as soon as possible after falling ill.

    Maternity Leave

In Slovenia, mothers are entitled to 105 days of paid maternity leave, starting 28 days before the estimated date of birth. A minimum of 15 days of maternity leave must be taken. To qualify for paid maternity leave, an employee must have contributed to the Parent Protection Insurance for at least one year within the three years preceding the pregnancy.

Compensation is provided by Social Security and is based on the contributions made to the Parent Protection Insurance. The benefit ranges from 55% of the minimum base salary to twice the average monthly salary in Slovenia.

    Paternity Leave

Fathers are entitled to 30 days of paternity leave in Slovenia. The paternity benefit equals 100% of the base amount but cannot exceed 2.5 times the average monthly wage.

    Parental Leave

In Slovenia, each parent is granted 130 days of parental leave to care for their child. This entitlement may be extended in the case of multiple or complicated births.

Parents can also transfer up to 100 days of their leave to the other parent, allowing for a combined total of 260 days of parental leave that can be shared between them.

    Other Leave

In Slovenia, employees are entitled to up to seven days of paid personal leave, which can be used for significant personal events such as weddings, births, and bereavement.
